Astragalus propinquus (syn. Astralagus membranaceus) is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used by Chinese herbalists and known in that culture as huáng qí which means Yellow Leader. The plant was originally found only in east Asia such as Mongolia and Siberia.

Astragalus root, whether taken as a tea or tablet, has been to shown to have powerful immune- enhancing benefits. It acts as an adaptogen and is primarily noted in clinical terms for reducing the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

The plant is one of many thousands of species in the Leguminosae family which includes beans and other legumes like soya for example. However, one species whose root is grown and harvested for its properties is used – A. propinquus. In English, this herb is called Mongolian Milkvetch, Goat’s Thorn. It grows as a perennial to about 1 ft. height with a similar spread and is hardy to zone (UK) 6. The plant flowers from June to August and the seeds are harvested.
