Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that is celebrated on May 5th each year, primarily in the United States and Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

The French forces, led by General Charles de Lorencez, marched toward the city of Puebla and were met by a much smaller and less-equipped Mexican Army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza.

Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Mexican Army was able to defeat the French forces at the Battle of Puebla, which became a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign intervention. The victory was short-lived, however, as the French were eventually able to take control of Mexico City and establish the Second Mexican Empire under the rule of Emperor Maximilian I.

While the Battle of Puebla did not ultimately change the course of the war, it became an important symbol of Mexican nationalism and pride. Cinco de Mayo has since become a popular holiday in Mexico and the United States, with celebrations often featuring traditional Mexican food, music, and dancing. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has also become a celebration of Mexican-American culture and heritage.
