Nails need looking after. Good nutrition is important not just for general well-being but also for those parts of us which provide structural protection and cosmetic benefits too. Any lack of vitamins and minerals and nails readily show visible signs that something is missing from our diet.

One condition affecting nails which is especially prone to inadequate nutrition is onychorrhexis, where grooves, dips and lines appear. A lack of certain minerals or nutrients is the most likely cause: protein, zinc, iron, folic acid and calcium are all culprits here.

One suggestion is to take a multivitamin supplement containing chelated minerals and the methylated B vitamins. Chelated minerals are absorbed rapidly into muscle cells rather than feeding the gut. It makes it easier for the body to make use of the minerals. Methylated B vitamins are found in all sorts of supplements and prove to be highly valuable in general metabolism. A good source of vitamins and minerals is offered by Designs For Health in their Twice Daily Multi product which is available from pureformulas.com

It takes four to five months for nails to show any of the benefits of a change in nutrition. Nail grows from its nail bed so patience and consistency with any supplement is a necessity.

If the condition persists with (or possibly without) discolouration then consult your doctor.

  1. Zinc is much more important health than we give it credit for. I reckon you should say a little bit more about this incredible metal because without it I would be really unwell.
