Methylsulphonylmethane (MSM) – An Ingredient For Improving Joint Health.

Sports nutritionists have long known that methylsulphonylmethane (MSM) intake benefits those suffering the debilitating impact of joint pain. MSM has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which have prompted its use in recovery from sports injuries. The ingredient has GRAS status and can be incorporated into a variety of food formats – supplements, beverages and bars.

Giant Sports Products added OptiMSM™ available from Bergstrom Nutrition (Vancouver, Washington. USA) to its pre-workout formulation –Metabolic Bioshock ©. OptiMSM™ was tried and tested in a clinical study examining physical resistance exercises in 24 moderately trained men, which produce muscular injury and pain due in part to joint inflammation and oxidative stresses. The study (Kalman et al., 2013) required consumption of 3g of OptiMSM™ over 14 days which reduced muscular pains after two hours following exercises on leg extensions to exhaustion of the muscle. This was compared to a placebo. The study reinforces the view that MSM reduces stressful muscle pain and discomfort following intense physical exercising.
