In Ayurvedic medicine, Arsh Kuthar Ras is used in the treatment of piles (haemorrhoids) and for indigestion. Its formulation, usually taken as a tablet, is based on various heavy metals and so has to be taken under strict medical guidance.
Arsh Kuthar Ras is taken as a daily dose of 125-250mg, once or twice a day, before or after food or as directed by an Ayurvedic doctor. It is usually taken with honey and hot water to improve its flavour. Over-dosing is an issue because of ironically the toxic nature of the ingredients. It is not to be taken in pregnancy, lactation and by children.
Arsh Kuthar Ras is an heterogeneous mixture of many ingredients, comprising the elements of mercury, sulphur, iron and mica which are purified. The other ingredients include Bael (Aegle marmelos), Lead Wort root (Plumbago zeylanica), black pepper (Piper nigrum), Danti (Baliospermum montanum), Shudda Vatsanabha (Aconitum ferox), borax, Barley (Hordeum vulgare), salt, cow urine and the latex from Euphorbia neriifolia. There is very little research information on the product and I’d be interested to know more about how effective it is.
