Why is Celsius So Popular?

Celsius Essential Energy Drink, 12 Fl Oz
c/o Celsius & Amazon

Celsius (Celsius Holdings Inc.) is the leading beverage brand in the grocery division on Amazon which is quite a position to occupy as well as the leading energy drink. It receives heavy endorsement from celebrities. It’s also testament to an idea that had to contend with Red Bull and Monster who already had high energy drinks with enormous market share and increasing potential. This company enjoys extraordinary growth  and the bubble is set to get bigger! On average there are 20 if not more SKUs of a dizzying number of flavours available which means constant variety on the shelf.

Claims

The product promise is as a pre-workout drink which offers energy ingredients in the form of 200mg per can serving. Other claims are zero sugars, no preservatives, colours or flavours. The products have a range of vitamins and minerals associated with energy mobilization. We have vitamin C, various B vitamins such as vitamin B2 (riboflavin), niacin, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), biotin, pantothenic acid (calcium d-pantothenate).

The minerals are calcium and sodium but the latter to a small extent but interestingly chelated chromium which is associated with energy.

Available in both sparkling and non-carbonated or still formats.

Celsius have also introduced their own ingredient blend for energy purposes which they call MetaPlus® Proprietary Blend. I believes is the most intriguing aspect of the brand because this provides most of the ingredients for functionality. We have taurine, guarana seed extract, green tea leaf extract, caffeine, glucuronolactone and ginger root extract.

Ginger lends a warm spicy note and is associated with heat generation (thermogenesis) whilst also helping to calm the stomach and aid digestion. If you have ever been on a cruise, crystallised ginger is the most natural way to reduce nausea not that this beverage is making claims for that. However, its presence means that it offers a benefit that many other energy or functional beverages have not taken advantage of themselves.

Guarana has cache in the functional beverage world. It is an Amazonian food and provides a natural source of caffeine. The seeds are the main source and not the root although many beverages which offer guarana do not distinguish between them in many cases.  It is true that they contain over twice the amount of caffeine than the average coffee bean.

Makes for a highly palatable alternative to other energy drinks such as Red Bull. It has no high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) which is a major removal.

Formulations

The current flavours are broad (taken from the web-site in 2022 to 2024) including:

Celsius Heat

Heat is a line of fitness drinks introduced in the summer of 2017. They are similar to the original line of sparkling products described above but focus on their proprietary thermogenic formula which is designed to boost energy, accelerate metabolisms and accelerate fat burning whilst maxing on calorie loss.

This product generally provides 300 mg of caffeine and 2,000 mg of L-citrulline. The new line-up is packaged into a larger, 12-ounce can and is designed primarily for fitness consumers looking to improve their training. These are available in three flavours:-

  • Inferno Punch
  • Blueberry Pomegranate
  • Cherry Lime

It is not that clear how the brand has made such impressive headway against other beverages in the same class with huge marketing budgets but nonetheless it continues to grow in marketshare.
