The goal is to assess the patient’s risk level so that healthcare providers can tailor their treatment plans, interventions, and monitoring strategies accordingly.
There are various factors considered in risk stratification, such as:
- Clinical history: Previous illnesses, surgeries, or risk factors like smoking, obesity, or family history.
- Physical exam: Signs of disease severity or complications.
- Laboratory tests: Blood work, imaging, or biomarkers that indicate disease progression or risk.
- Age and comorbidities: These are often key determinants in assessing risk.
Patients are often classified into different risk groups (e.g., low, medium, or high risk) based on these factors. This enables healthcare providers to prioritize resources, ensure more intensive monitoring for higher-risk patients, and possibly offer more aggressive treatments to those who need it most.
For example, in cardiovascular disease, a risk score like the Framingham Risk Score is used to predict the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke over a certain period. Similarly, in cancer treatment, risk stratification helps determine whether a patient might benefit from aggressive therapies or more conservative management.
