Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Miq.) Pax is more commonly called Hai Er Shen (Kid Ginseng), Tai Zi Shen (Prince Ginseng) or False Starwort. It is a member of the Caryphyllaceae family and regularly used in Chinese herbal medicine.
The herb is used as a treatment for lung damage generated by overheating, asthma, cough and emphysema. It has also been prescribed for treating spleen damage.
Tyrosinase inhibitory cyclic peptides called pseudostellarins AC, DF and G have been isolated (Morita et al., 1994a, b, c). Another, denoted B has been isolated using a high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) with a two-phase solvent system (Han et al., 2007).
Aqueous root extracts are claimed to have relatively weak antioxidant activity (Ng et al., 2004). A Kunitz-type trypsin protease inhibitor and a lectin were isolated from the roots. The trypsin inhibitor is linked to antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum (Wand & Ng, 2006).
