Genetic studies indicate that the peach species originated in China although there is some controversy as to whether it was already being disputed. The fruit has certainly been cultivated from the earliest history of Chinese culture. Recently, it was considered that the domestication of peaches started in early 6,000 B.C. in the Zhejiang Province of China. Before the 10th century B.C., peaches were mentioned and referenced in Chinese writing and they were a popular fruit of emperors and kings. The domesticated peach was brought from China to Japan.  The domestication of peach started in 4,700-4,400 B.C. in Japan during the Jomon period. In India, the peach first appears during Harappan period where it became an established fruit

In ancient times, it was found in other parts of Western Asia. The peach as a fruit for consumption then arrives in Persia from China, along the Silk Routes. It reaches Greece by 300 B.C. when the fruit was introduced by Alexander the Great to Europe after he conquered the Persians. In the 1st century AD, peaches were already part of the Roman dining table having conquered Athens and seen the peach. They were then widely cultivated in the region of Emilia-Romagna. We should not forget nectarines either which are the smooth skinned form of peaches.

In the 16th century, peach was taken by Spanish explorers to America but also grown as a delicacy in England and France. Cultivation in more northern climates of Europe meant they have been regarded as a delicacy. However, cultivation is still developing hardier types and whilst they are not as hardy as apricots, they are grown in the southern counties of the UK.  In the early 17th century, peaches were brought by the horticulturist George Minifie to the North American colonies from England. In the 19th century, the commercial production of peaches began in the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Georgia. California is now one of the main states in the USA for growing the fruit and it remains a key commercial fruit.
