  • Borage or Starflower as it is also known is a robust hardy annual.
  • Easy to grow and a ‘cottage garden’ popular plant.
  • Ideal for borders and provides blue flowers even when grown in poor soils.
  • Great for bees but seed producing and highly prolific.
  • The seeds are the sources of the supplement borage oil which rivals evening primrose oil for its nutritional value. Rich in gamma-linolenic and linoleic acids.

Sowing

Sow outdoors where it is to flower, 0.5cm or 1/4″ deep. Sow directly into finely prepared soil which has been watered already. The seedling usually appear in 14-28 days. Thin seedlings to 30cm or 12 inches apart. Keep watering until the plants are established. For a continuous display make two or three sowings at weekly intervals.

Highly prolific and can be a nuisance in the garden. Needs careful management.

Ideal as a general herb in garnish and in soups.

Borage seeds are also very healthy. The plant is not related or to be confused with Indian Borage.
