Coffee pod machines have seen considerable development in the last year since we last reviewed this type of machine in 2019. We all need a coffee in the morning to get us up and running but now the options on types of machine is almost overwhelming. If we take a brief look at what is available this year I think we would be surprised by the simplicity of some of the newest models. As with all these models, be clear as to which type of coffee pod to use. Most machines will only use a particular type.

DeLonghi Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio
Checking the pressure ratings, this machine has one of the highest pressure pumps. It may seem the oddest way to start a review but this rating is extremely important because it means some of the best flavour is obtained from the pod. makes use of an LED display to show how much water is being used. The reservoir is extremely large so many more cups can be produced compared to other machines. Very pleasing to look at and compact too making it a good one of the kitchen worktop. The machine has a joystick which means the coffee generated can be produced to almost any desired amount.

Nespresso Vertuo Coffee
If you want barista style coffee then this may be your machine. Stylish and funky and straight forward to use. Will do a standard series of 5 different single serve coffee cup sizes depending on which button is chosen. Actually a smart coffee maker using Nespresso’s Centrifusion technology which will read a barcode for delivering the coffee quality of choice. Will also heat up the water in 15 seconds flat. The machine also comes with various bundles. the one here includes an Aeroccino 3 milk frother.
KitchenAid Nespresso Artisan
KitchenAid are producers of extremely well designed, and simple and easy machines to operate. One of our reviewers thought the Artisan was almost too simple but it does have an attractive look to it. The design is retro or at least vintage if there is such a distinction. Likewise this particular model has a vibrant ‘candy apple’ red colour but there is a black variant too. Comes with a significantly perky solid loading handle for putting the Nespresso capsules into the machine. Comes with six pre-programmed settings which means it can deliver a variety of beverage volumes from small cups to whacking great loads. The water comes up to temperature quickly as well. The tank is large at 1.4 litres meaning that a large number of cups can be brewed.

Dualit 85180 Cafe Cino Coffee Machine
Dualit create beautifully designed machines which are picturesque but fashionably functional. The model is highly sophisticated with its black, slightly masculine looks although there is a certain fussiness about the look. The dosing is accurate and has a temperature booster to deliver hot brews as an alternative design to the Lavazza machine shown below. Sophistication also comes with a dosing memory function. For the extra cost there is a built in milk frother to give the serious drinker an optional extra.

The Lavazza Jolie Coffee Machine
Part of the A Modo Mia range of coffee appliances from Lavazza. It is compact, very colourful and has typical Italian styling which reminds us of a Bugatti. It has a straightforward single button action. There is also a 10 bar pressure pump for extracting maximum flavour from the pod. This particular machine also comes with Thermoblock technology which means that water delivery is nearly boiling on delivery although not quite for safety reasons.

Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker K-Cup Pod
A rather dinky, unassuming coffee pod machine available in the US and still one of the most popular. Will brew a range of K-Cup pod sizes from 6 to 10 oz. The smallest setting of 6oz produces the strongest brew. A reasonable water reservoir of 48 oz. which means it will deliver enough brews in a morning but no more than 6 in reality. Very simple system to operate. Comes with instructions on descaling although that should only be an issue with hard water. Also has a an auto-off function which is programmed to turn your machine off if it has not been in use for two hours. Good for saving energy ! Does seem to be prone to issues if the nozzle is not cleaned. Has been around since 2017 but still retains its popularity.
