Bakumondoto

A girl having a cough on a white background. A case for treatment with bakumondoto.

Bakumondoto  is a traditional herbal medicine which has been used in Japan for the treatment of a number of inflammatory respiratory conditions such as cough, bronchitis and bronchial asthma.

Bakumondoto contains six herbal ingredients which are:-

Ophiopogon Tuber
Brown Rice
Pinellia Tuber
Jujube (Zizyphus)
Glycyrrhiza
Ginseng

A preparation is usually taken of 9 grams daily in 2 or 3 doses before or between meals. The dosage is usually adjusted according to the patient’s age, body weight and severity of symptoms.

The medicine is used as part of a traditional kampo preparation. Since this product contains Glycyrrhiza, careful attention should be paid to the serum potassium level, blood
pressure, etc., and if any abnormality is observed, administration should be discontinued.

A small clinical study with 19 patients who had a post-infectious prolonged cough showed that Bakumondoto administration was a safe and effective treatment (Irifune et al., 2011).
