Walking down the garden examining the broccoli and cabbages brought into sharp focus how valuable these greens are, especially in the light of recent research into oral cancers. The concept of ‘green chemoprevention’ is nowadays put forward as a way of using plant and seed extracts to prevent various diseases. The issue is the increasing level of environmental pollution which is linked to increased risks generally of disease and whether this can be combated successfully.

Broccoli, especially has been associated with preventing throat cancer according to the recent research coming out of the USA. We’ve spoken before of the value of the Cruciferae family including cauliflower and rocket (arugula) with its potent array of helpful nutrients such as the sulphur containing sulforaphane, other glucosinolates, its vitamins and fibre content.

Studies recently showed in a mouse model that extracts of broccoli sprouts protected the throats of mice from forms of oral cancer. It has prompted further investigation into clinical studies on those of us with a high risk of recurring head and neck cancers. The University of Pittsburgh’s Cancer Institute (UPCI) will conduct this research. Capsules of broccoli seed powder had already been given to 10 patients who could tolerate the regimen. In this prospective study, the scientists want to show if the extract protects the oral area- the mouth and throat from cancer causing chemicals.

The lead author Dr. Julie Bauman at the UPCI has already stated “People who are cured of head and neck cancer are still at very high risk for a second cancer in their mouth or throat, and, unfortunately, these second cancers are commonly fatal.” The objective is to find out if broccoli extracts, especially those containing sulforaphane can prevent oral cancer.
