Parabens act as preservatives, and are widely used in shampoos, shaving products, moisturisers, cosmetics, and many other personal care products.
They slow the growth of mould and bacteria, giving products a longer, more stable shelf life.
There have been concerns about the safety of parabens for some years. Currently they can be included at safe concentrations in products, but the EU recommends that cosmetic leave-on products designed for young children below the age of three should not contain parabens.
