Vitamin D Supplements

The body can make vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin when you are outdoors.

In the UK, from late March to the end of September, most people should be able to get all the vitamin D they need from sunlight, but between October and early March here in the UK we cannot make enough in this way.

Vitamin D boosts the immune system by:

  1. Helping immune cells, including T cells and macrophages to work more effectively
  2. Helping to reduce inflammation.
  3. People who are vitamin D deficient appear to have decreased lung function and an increased risk of respiratory diseases, including tuberculosis and asthma, as well as viral and bacterial respiratory infections.

The NHS recommends adults and children over the age of 4 take a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during the autumn and winter. People who have dark skin or do not get outdoors very often are recommended to take 10 micrograms of vitamin D throughout the year.
