Sustainable gardening means gardening in a smart and eco-friendly way, with protecting the planet always at the forefront of your mind.

It is an increasingly popular approach which is set to become the norm.

On top of the obvious benefits to wildlife and the environment, it will also save you money.

Any food you produce in a sustainable garden will be richer in nutrients and taste better too, so what’s not to love?!

There are a number of really easy, relatively inexpensive ways to make your garden more eco-friendly.

  • Produce your own compost by recycling your food and garden waste. The result is free, nutrient-rich, organic fertilizer for your garden.
  • Conserve water resources by using a water butt to store and use rainwater in their garden.
  • Don’t buy plastic plant pots. Instead choose biodegradable or recyclable alternatives, or better still make your own from waste paper.
  • Re-use any plastic pots and trays you have.
  • Buy plant labels made from natural materials rather than plastic.
  • Avoid using chemical herbicides. Keep on top of weeds using natural methods such as hoeing and mulching.
  • Avoid using chemical pesticides by encouraging natural pests. Provide them with a wild habitat or build a bug hotel.
  • When you buy compost, make sure it is peat-free.
