Headquarters

Nabisco is headquartered in East Hanover, New Jersey, United States. The company’s roots in New Jersey date back to its early history, and it continues to operate from this location as part of its broader U.S. operations.

History

  • Formation: Nabisco was formed in 1898 through the merger of several baking companies, including the American Biscuit and Manufacturing Company, the New York Biscuit Company, and the United States Baking Company. The new entity was originally named the National Biscuit Company, later shortened to Nabisco in 1941.
  • Early Innovations: Nabisco became known for its innovations in packaging, marketing, and production. One of its early successes was the development of the “In-Er Seal” package, which improved the freshness and shelf life of its products.
  • Introduction of Iconic Brands: Over the decades, Nabisco introduced many of the brands that are now household names, such as Oreo (1912), Ritz (1934), and Chips Ahoy! (1963).
  • Ownership Changes: Nabisco underwent several ownership changes in its history. In 1985, it was acquired by R.J. Reynolds in a deal that created RJR Nabisco, one of the largest food and tobacco companies at the time. This acquisition became famous due to the highly publicized leveraged buyout (LBO) led by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) in 1988, which was chronicled in the book and movie Barbarians at the Gate.
  • Current Ownership: In 2000, Nabisco was acquired by Kraft Foods. Later, in 2012, Kraft Foods split into two companies: Kraft Foods Group and Mondelez International. Nabisco became part of Mondelez International, which now operates Nabisco as part of its extensive global snack portfolio.

Market Presence and Value

Nabisco remains one of the leading players in the global snack food industry. As a key part of Mondelez International, Nabisco contributes significantly to the company’s overall revenue. Mondelez International, which also owns brands like Cadbury, Toblerone, and Milka, has a market capitalization of over $80 billion as of recent estimates.

Nabisco’s brands, particularly Oreo, continue to perform strongly in markets around the world. The Oreo brand alone is worth billions, making it one of the most valuable cookie brands globally.

Nabisco is a storied American snack food company with a history dating back over a century. From its early days as the National Biscuit Company to its current status as part of Mondelez International, Nabisco has been at the forefront of the snack industry, creating and marketing some of the most iconic brands in the world. With a base in East Hanover, New Jersey, Nabisco continues to be a major player in the global food market, driving significant value for its parent company.
