Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa)

Punarnava (Sanskrit) or mookirattai in Tamil is a creeper that grows throughout India. It is also known as Boerhavia diffusa.

In Ayurvedic medicine it is used as a purgative for toxins by helping to support both kidney and liver function, reduce oedema associated with heart and kidney, and treat gastro-intestinal disorders. The product is targeted at women’s health.

  1. I’m not sure if you reference this but I use this herb to remove excess kapha from my system. Sounds weird but if you follow Ayurvedic medicine then you have something important to consider. I’ve found it also helps with my joints as I suffer arthritis following a car crash which damaged my knees.

  2. I take about 1/2 of a teaspoon of this herb with every meal and my mother sprinkles it on her food. She has a kidney complaint and I swear that this is not a placebo effect when I say we both say we do not see the sort of weight gain that others experience. I’d love to know more about this herb and I wish you put some more information about it into your article. I think it’s a great product for what it is claimed to do. As soon as I stop using it, I find my water retention problems come back. My mother says the same.
