A colourful vegetable which is weather resistant and a makes a super addition to any salad. The variety ‘Rossa di Treviso Precoce‘ is not only vibrant maroon/burgundy colour with white and has a unique zesty flavour. Some parts of the flowers are edible too.
Try with a warm pear salad.
Sowing
Sow seed between April and September for salad leaves or in June and July for full-sized heads.
Seeds should be sown directly and thinly about 1 cm deep, in rows 30cm apart. Thin seedlings later if necessary.
The heads can be regularly cut to allow further heads to form.
Harvest from June onwards to December. The leaves may go brown with frost but there is a certain hardiness to them.
Seeds are available from Thompson & Morgan.
