  • Vitamin E helps maintain healthy skin and eyes, and strengthen the body’s natural defence against illness and infection (the immune system).

Vitamin E is found in a wide variety of foods.

The main benefits are:-

  • promotes heart and circulatory health
  • contributes to a healthy skin and immune function.
  • when applied to the skin in its oil format, it will support a healthy complexion so it has a beauty function too
  • the oil form is also a skin moisturiser.

Good sources include:

  • plant oils such as soya, corn and olive oil
  • meat and poultry
  • eggs
  • nuts and seeds
  • wheatgerm which is found in cereals and cereal products

The amount of this vitamin you need is:

  • 4mg a day for men
  • 3mg a day for women

You should be able to get the amount of this vitamin you need by eating a varied and balanced diet. If you take supplements, don’t take too much as this could be harmful.

Any vitamin E your body doesn’t need immediately is stored for future use, so you don’t need it in your diet every day. Taking 540mg or less a day of vitamin E supplements is unlikely to cause any harm. Deficiency is very rare but it does occur in people with particular genetic disorders and in very low-weight premature infants.

A few patients take it as a supplement to prevent heart disease and improve the condition of their blood vessels. The main area of benefit is to reduce hardening of the arteries, to reduce chest pain and leg pain which occurs when arteries are blocked or if you have high blood pressure. In some cases it will reduce the incidence of heart attack.

Vitamin E will also help treat diabetes and its various complications. It is sometimes taken for preventing cancer, especially lung and oral cancer in smokers. It can reduce the development of colorectal cancer and the formation of polyps. It also helps reduce three other types of cancer forming; gastric, pancreatic and prostate.

Some women take this vitamin to prevent complications in late pregnancy due to high blood pressure as in pre-eclampsia, to reduce painful periods and menopausal syndrome, minimise hot flushes associated with breast cancer and even reduce the formation of breast cysts.

For sports people, supplementation can help improve physical rigour and endurance, increase levels of energy and reduce muscle damage after exercise. There is some evidence it might improve muscle strength and physical training with weights.
