Tryptophan

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid which is claimed to have the following benefits:-

  • supports relaxation
  • promotes restful sleep
  • encourages positive mood
  • supports healthy nervous system

It is a constituent of proteins as all amino acids are but it also has an extremely important role in brain metabolism. This amino acid is converted into 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) as well as serotonin. Serotonin is needed by the brain for proper neuro-functioning if it cane be called that and for helping people sleep. 

Tryptophan is often supplemented as an alternative to both 5-HTP and serotonin. In some cases it is used to treat mental health disorders, to quit smoking, to improve athletic performance and to ameliorate symptoms in people with a condition called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).  It is however possibly unsafe when taken orally as a medicine because it is associated with a condition called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS).
