Magnesium L-Threonate

Compounds regularly appear with health benefits. This particular compound, magnesium L-threonate (CAS no. 778571-57-6, and the hydrate is CAS no. 500304-76-7) is being marketed as a memory enhancer and cognition improver. The initial study that demonstrated this effect was conducted in rats (Slutsky et al., 2010). It was demonstrated that brain function measured through synaptic enhancement led to improvements in working memory, learning ability, and short- and long term memory in both juvenile and adult rats. The benefits were attributed to higher levels of brain magnesium rather than threonate.

Human intervention studies are still needed to support these findings even though it is sold as a dietary supplement. The supplement is available from AIDP Inc., City of Industry, Calif. USA (T: 001 866-262-6699, www.magtein.com). US Patents for ADIP describe its manufacture and applications.

Magnesium as a mineral in its own right is important for energy metabolism and in many other aspects of nutrition. There is also a link with zinc and L-theanine which are tow other ingredients associated with good sleep and cognitive benefit.

  1. I suffer with Lyme disease which is highly problematic for me and for many others. I find that the principal benefit from this particular ingredient is not so much memory improvement but simply better sleep and it would be worth your writing just mentioning some of the benefits that have been researched in this are for the compound. I don’t necessarily use magtein products and I’m not here to endorse them because there are others which work equally well. Given the stresses and strains that doctors are put under, any product which supports concentration is worth checking out as long as there is some valid clinical research to back it up.

  2. I wondered if you knew anything about Lyme’s Disease. the reason is I have it and some-one else does too. It makes suffer with being absent minded and I think it is related to post-traumatic stress disorder plus insomnia. I have been taking magnesium threonate for a while now and I’m convinced it works really well to sharpen my thinking and certainly improve my concentration. I don’t wake up either every three hours either. I get a solid 6 hours before I need to go to the cloakroom. I would give this product six stars if I could.
