Niederegger

Niederegger is a famous example of German chocolate especially of marzipan, nougat and truffles. Often seen as a leading brand in high-end retailers especially when you walk through the duty-free sites at airports. To be honest, just one chocolate is needed at any particular time.

The history of the business is a fascinating one. It was founded by the pastry chef Johann Georg Niederegger in 1806. His expertise was in marzipan, this continued and it deservedly keeps its fine reputation today.  The business began as a cafe having then been known as Café Niederegger. It is situated in the heart of Lübeck in Germany and was part of the Hanseatic League.

Marzipan is probably Niederegger’s main area of expertise and it certainly is a luxury product. We tend to think of them as a Christmas product but they are there for every special occasion. One of the most famous products is their very colourful selection of chocolate covered marzipans in different flavours from orange, pineapple, pistachio to lime. We also enjoy the Dark Loaf which is a fairly unsweetned form of marzipan covered in dark chocolate.

Almonds which is the main ingredient in marzipan has a number of great health benefits. There is a particular benefit where heart and cardiovascular health is concerned. Whilst sugar might not be so attractive to many it is still worth examining some of these aspects.
