Cadbury is an iconic brand and a large British confectionary business which sells many of its products globally. It is now owned by Mondelez International since 2010. The brand is the second largest confectionary brand in the world after Mars.
The Cadbury business was started by John Cadbury in Birmingham in 1824. Back then, tea and coffee were also sold as well as drinking chocolate which were beverages that were beginning to enter national psyche. The business developed further with the input of his brother Benjamin and his sons. One son, George developed the Bournville estate near the University of Birmingham which is a classic model village designed to house and support workers.Â
Cadbury was granted its first Royal Warrant in 1854 by Queen Victoria and has been holding a Royal Warrant by the present Queen Elizabeth II since 1955.
In 1969, the business merged with another highly successful British brand Schweppes to become Cadbury Schweppes. The business was split in March 2007 and then acquired by Kraft Foods following a takeover in 2010.
